A continuous involvement of stakeholders promotes the ecosystem approach to fisheries in the 8-fjords area on the Swedish west coast

Abstract: . (2017) AbstractThe coastal marine environment in the 8-fjords area on the Swedish west coast has been subjected to various stakeholder co-management initiatives since 1999. Stakeholders and authorities have acted by supporting and implementing gradually stricter fishing restrictions following the collapse in the 1970s of several demersal fish stocks and their apparent lack of recovery. Moreover, concerns have been raised regarding a locally sharp depletion of eelgrass meadows, in addition to an apparent inc… Show more

“…Also, our results give a possibility to assess the present local population status (c.f. Bartolino et al, 2012;Bryhn et al, 2017). The observed maximal egg densities, including both years, varied between 0.18 and 5.3 stage I-II cod eggs m À2 between studied areas (Table 4).…”

“…These results are highly important for an ecosystem fisheries management (c.f. Long et al, 2015;Bryhn et al, 2017) that needs to take the presence of local spawning into account in future planning. However, patterns of the genetic structure are difficult to disentangle, as Atlantic cod in the North Sea-Skagerrak-Kattegat area seem to be a mixture of co-existing resident local forms, completing their entire life cycle in fjords or sheltered areas, and oceanic populations (Knutsen et al, 2011(Knutsen et al, , 2018Barth et al, 2017).…”

“…Named after Sweden's only fjord system and located 50 km north of Sweden's second largest city, Gothenburg, the area is widely used for recreation by Swedes from all over the country and from Norway. Faced with environmental problems related to nutrient effluents from the mainland and immiseration of the local cod stock due to decades of overfishing (Baden et al, 2012), a network of local stakeholders has worked since 1999 with cross-municipal coastal management (Bryhn et al, 2017). These circumstances formed a good basis for a case study involving both a conventional monetary valuation and a DV: the monetary valuation, a so-called stated preference survey, needed data for a 'realistic policy scenario' (Johnston et al, 2017;Östberg et al, 2012) and the DV needed engaged, 'information rich' participants likely to hold a range of | 387 different viewpoints on their local community (Baker et al, 2006).…”

“…Since 2017, HaV has been developing plans for an ecosystem-based approach for the Swedish fisheries that will incorporate ecological, economic and social dimensions. Furthermore, local coastal fishers' have been calling for the introduction of co-management regimes based on successful examples experienced in a handful of localities on the Swedish coast (see Bryhn et al 2017). All these ideas are currently still under discussion at national levels of fisheries management in Sweden.…”
