Abstract. More and more home devices are equipped with advanced computational capabilities to improve the user satisfaction (e.g., programmable heating system, Internet TV). Although these devices exhibit communication capabilities, their integration into a larger home monitoring system remains a challenging task, partly due to the strong heterogeneity of technologies and protocols. In this paper, we therefore propose to reconsider the architecture of home monitoring systems by focusing on data and events that are produced and triggered by home devices. In particular, our middleware platform, named DIGIHOME, applies i) the REST (REpresentational State Transfer) architectural style to leverage on the integration of multi-scale systems-of-systems (from Wireless Sensor Networks to the Internet) and ii) a CEP (Complex Event Processing) engine to collect information from heterogeneous sources and detect application-specific situations. The benefits of the DIGIHOME platform are demonstrated on smart home scenarios covering home automation, emergency detection, and energy saving situations.

Abstract-Ubiquitous environments provide families of context-aware applications that are capable of exploiting the user mobility as well as the device variability. Typically, these applications retrieve context information from local and remote providers and react accordingly to the detected variations. However, this must be done by considering the heterogeneity of devices and protocols found in ubiquitous environments. Unfortunately, although the context integration represents a keystone of context-aware systems, existing approaches in the literature fail to integrate the diversity of context sources in a standard and flexible way. Therefore, in this paper, we overcome this challenge by introducing resource-oriented bindings into the SCA (Service Component Architecture) model. This new kind of bindings follows the REpresentational State Transfer (REST) principles and leverages the provision of context as RESTful resources. A smart home scenario that highlights challenges in terms of integration in ubiquitous environments motivates the use of our approach.

Abstract. Conveniently fused and combined with data from external sources, information from sensors embedded in a mobile device may offer a dynamic view of the user's situation, sufficient to build adaptive context-aware services. In order to shorten the development cycle of these applications, an embeddable framework to acquire, fuse and reason on context information is hereby described. 'CASanDRA Mobile' is designed to work autonomously in resourceconstrained devices, offering to application developers a transparent management of context information. Based on a service-oriented architecture implemented in mobile OSGi, it offers a scalable infrastructure of bundles which decouple context acquisition and automate context inference from application development. 'CASanDRA Mobile' aims at providing the user with full control on his prívate context data, by using privacy policies suitable to handle P2P context sharing. To exemplify how to use the framework features, the design procedure for a context-aware wellness application is described.
