This article aims to study the modern system of archives development in China and to determine a promising model of its adaptation to global challenges in the post-truth era. The research methodology is based on a mixed qualitative and quantitative analysis of statistical data that show the development dynamics of archives system in China concerning public access and the formation of modern views on the problem of fact-checking, as well as their reliability in the new historical post-truth era. For effective verification of archival facts, researchers developed an adaptation model of China's archives to global challenges of information reliability in the post-truth era. It is based on the idea of using artificial intelligence and the expert opinion of archivists. The practical use of the proposed model will contribute to improving the efficiency of archives, as well as the development of digital technologies in this area.

The digital news preservation and management of low-resource languages are challenging tasks, especially in vast collections. Unique identification of individual digital objects is possible with well-defined attributes to assure efficient management, such as access, retrieval, preservation, usability, and transformability. The metadata element set is required to maximize the available attributes related to the digital objects. To create a comprehensive metadata set that contains all the necessary attributes and data about the digital news objects. It is more challenging and complicated when the archive contains articles from low-resourced and morphologically complex languages like Urdu and Arabic, which is difficult for machines to understand. The study presents challenges in low-resource languages (LRL) and research challenges. This metadata will help to link news articles based on similarity with other news articles stored in the digital news stories archive (DNSA) and ensures accessibility. In this study, we introduced 38 metadata elements set for the digital news stories preservation (DNSP) framework, of which 16 are explicit and 12 are implicit metadata elements. The paper presents how the digital news stories archive (DNSA) is enhanced to a multilingual archive and discusses the digital news stories extractor, which addresses major issues in implementing low-resource languages and facilitates normalized format migration. The extraction results are presented in detail for high-resource languages, that is, English, and low-resource languages (HRL), that is, Urdu and Arabic. The LRL encountered a high error rate during preservation compared to HRL, 10%, and 03%, respectively. The metadata extraction results show that HRL sources support all metadata elements as compared to LRL. The LRL has good support for explicit meta elements and many implicit meta elements with low extraction percentages. The LRL needs a more detailed study for accurate news content extraction and archiving for future access.

PurposeThe World Wide Web has become an essential platform for a news publication, and it has become one of the primary sources of information dissemination in the past few years. Electronic media, i.e., television channels, magazines and newspapers, have started publishing news online. This online information is prompt to be disappeared because of short life-span and imperative to be archived for the long-term and future generations. This paper presents a content-based similarity measure based on the headings of the news articles for linking digital news stories published in various newspapers during the preservation process that helps to ensure future accessibility.Design/methodology/approachTo evaluate the accuracy and assess the effectiveness and worth of the proposed measure for linking news articles in Digital News Story Archive (DNSA), we adopted both, system-centric and user-centric (human judgment) evaluation over different datasets of news articles.FindingsThe proposed similarity measure is evaluated using different sizes of datasets, and the results are compared by both user-centric technique, i.e., expert judgment and system-centric techniques, i.e., cosine similarity measure, extended Jaccard measure and common ratio measure for stories (CRMS). The comparison helps to get a broader impact and can be helpful for generalization of the measure for different categories of news articles. Multiple experiments have conducted the findings of which showed that the measure presented viable results for national and international news, while best results for linking sports news articles during preservation based on headings.Originality/valueThe DNSA preserves a huge number of news articles from multiple news sources and to link with a vast collection, which encourages to introduce an efficient linking mechanism with few terms to manipulate. The CRMS is modified to deal with the headings of news articles as a part of the digital news stories preservation framework and comprehensively analysed.
