A Content Analysis of School Counseling Supervision

Abstract: Building upon previous reviews of clinical supervision in counseling, we analyzed the content of 69 articles on school counseling supervision published from 1968 to 2017. We identified publication, methodological, and topical trends in school counseling supervision and contextualized them within the broader counseling supervision research, thereby highlighting important next steps for school counseling supervision research and practice.

“…According to Bledsoe et al (2018), supervision activities are carried out to improve and control all activities to be carried out optimally. On the other hand, the impact of supervision ensures that activities are effectively carried out by those responsible for carrying them out (Tang, 2019).…”

“…They then used a chi-square analysis to test if supervisees' level of experience was related to the type of feedback provided. In Bledsoe et al (2019), described in more detail below, the authors used an alternative to chi-square called a Fisher-Freeman-Halton test to examine whether there were relationships among the types of articles published (e.g., conceptual, empirical) and the journal outlet or the supervision topics addressed (e.g., modality, interventions). McKibben et al (2019) included deductively coded categories as predictor variables in a multiple regression model, along with survey data as a criterion variable.…”

“…Bernard and Luke (2015) content analyzed 184 articles on clinical supervision published in counseling journals over a 10-year period, and they identified the frequency at which counseling journals were publishing clinical supervision scholarship, the types of articles being published (e.g., conceptual, empirical), and topic areas addressed by researchers (e.g., modalities, interventions). Bledsoe et al (2019) built upon Bernard and Luke's methodology and content analyzed 69 articles on clinical supervision in the school counseling specialty. Both Bernard and Luke and Bledsoe et al clearly described their units of analyses (i.e., journal articles), unit sampling (i.e., journal inclusion criteria), recording (i.e., written text), and data reduction strategies (including tracking interrater reliability).…”

“…Qualitative researchers focused on experiences related to specific supervisory approaches, such as structured group peer supervision to improve problem‐solving skills (McKenney et al, 2019) and international school counselor experiences with the general supervision process, highlighting concerns related to lack of structure and time, as well as a need for support (Tan, 2019). Finally, Bledsoe et al (2019) completed a content analysis regarding diversity in school counseling supervision literature, noting that supervision was underemphasized and highlighting the need to address the unique supervisory needs of school counselors as they pertain to diversity and inclusion in training.…”
