Abstract: Sex determination in the silkworm, Bombyx mori , is based on Feminizer ( Fem ), a W-linked Fem piRNA that triggers female development in WZ individuals, and the Z-linked Masculinizer ( Masc ), which initiates male development and dosage compensation in ZZ individuals.
