A Conservative Approach to a Peripheral Ameloblastoma

Abstract: Peripheral Ameloblastoma (PA) is the rarest variant of ameloblastoma. It differs from the other subtypes of ameloblastoma in its localization: it arises in the soft tissues of the oral cavity coating the tooth bearing bones. Generally, it manifests nonaggressive behavior and it can be treated with complete removal by local conservative excision. In this study we report a case of PA of the maxilla in a 78-year-old female patient and we describe the four different histopathological patterns revealed by histologi… Show more

“…3 Typically, aggressive surgical treatments, such as marginal or segmental resection have been implemented, but some conservative surgical methods are also being introduced, including decompression, enucleation, or curettage. 4,5 This case report shows the potential for favorable healing without recurrence in ameloblastoma inpatients treated with conservative surgery i.e. enucleation and curettage.…”

“…Several studies have recommended conservative management depending on the macroscopic and radiological appearances. [3][4][5] Regardless of being classified as a benign tumor, due to its characteristics of local invasion and recurrence rate, the management of patients with unicysticameloblastoma must be carefully decided. The biological behavior of unicysticameloblastoma tends to be less invasive when compared to the solid variant.…”

“…The peripheral ameloblastomas are usually treated with a wide local excision (Chae et al, 2015;Borrello et al, 2016). However, considering the recurrence frequency reported (9 to19%), a long term follow-up is required (Borrello et al, 2016).…”
