A Confirmatory Approach to the Factor Structure of the Boredom Proneness Scale: Evidence for a Two-Factor Short Form

Abstract: We analyzed previous exploratory factor analytic structures on the Boredom Proneness Scale (BPS; Farmer & Sundberg, 1986) using confirmatory factor analysis in structural equation modeling in LISREL 8 (Jöreskog & Sörbom, 1993). These analyses indicated that 2 factors were generally consistent across 6 exploratory models. Items that had significant loadings on these two factors (N = 12; 6 for each factor) indicated a lack of Internal Stimulation and External Stimulation. In further analysis on these 12 items us… Show more

“…Earlier Job Boredom scales (Grubb, 1975;Lee, 1986) mainly focused on the causes of work boredom in terms of an understimulating work environment (e.g., repetitiveness or monotony) rather than on its affective, cognitive, and behavioral manifestations (Vodanovich, Wallace, & Kass, 2005). On the other hand, dispositional boredom scales (Farmer & Sundberg, 1986) take these different manifestations of boredom into account, but do not link these to the job.…”

“…Measure reliability ranged from acceptable to good in our current study (see Table 2). (Vodanovich, Wallace, & Kass, 2005) is a 12-item self-report measure of perceptions of limited internal or external stimulation (e.g., "I find it easy to entertain myself") rated on a 7-point Likert scale…”

“…Social competence was assessed with the 20 item Emotional Loneliness Questionnaire (Russell et al, 1980) and the 19 item Simple Rathus Assertiveness Scale (Jenerette and Dixon, 2010). Self-concept was assessed using the 40 item Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory (Battle, 1992) Boredom proneness was assessed using the 12 item Boredom Proneness Scale (Vodanovich et al, 2005).…”
