A concise review on the role of author self-citations in information science, bibliometrics and science policy

Abstract: The objective of the present study is twofold: (1) to show the aims and means of quantitative interpretation of bibliographic features in bibliometrics and their re-interpretation in research policy, and (2) to summarise the state-of-art in self-citation research. The authors describe three approaches to the role of author self-citations and possible conflicts arising from the different perspectives. From the bibliometric viewpoint we can conclude that that there is no reason for condemning self-citations in ge… Show more

“…[94][95]. Third, high citation of an article could be due to various reasons while some are practical (such as: to introduce a study that builds on previous knowledge, to refer to methodologies already developed or utilized in previous articles [96]) but others are doubtful (such as excessive self-citation and 'citation of poor work' [97] etc.). So PAPER AUTHORSHIP AND CONTENT ANALYSIS OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION RESEARCH: A CASE STUDY citation count can only provide 'an approximate measure for scientific quality' [85].…”

“…Thus, in the analysis reported in this paper, self citations have not been excluded. Many researchers believe that "self" citations do not necessarily denote the popularity of one's research publications (Glänzel, Debackere et al 2006). It is instead widely accepted that citations by other researchers to one's work denote research impact and popularity.…”

“…Self-citation is a common phenomenon in the process of disseminating scientific knowledge (Glänzel et al, 2006;Shah et al, 2015). In Library and Information Science, several papers offer evidence that about half the papers published in specialized journals contain at least one instance of self-citation (Dimitroff and Arlitsch, 1995;Davarpanah and Aslekia, 2008).…”
