Little is known about the nature of relationships between sleep disturbance and influencing factors in rheumatoid arthritis. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence sleep disturbance and to evaluate mediating effects of depression on sleep disturbance. A nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational study design was adopted. One hundred patients with rheumatoid arthritis were recruited. Inflammatory status and levels of pain, fatigue, functional disability, depression, and sleep disturbance were measured. The factors that directly influenced sleep disturbance were gender, rheumatoid arthritis duration, serum C-reactive protein level, fatigue, and depression. Depression was found to have mediating effects on the relationships between sleep disturbance and arthritis symptoms. Pain, fatigue, and depression were found to have significant direct or indirect impacts on sleep disturbance. Our findings may improve understanding of sleep disturbance and aid the development of effective nursing management strategies for patients with rheumatoid arthritis suffering from sleep disturbance.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-care intervention using a mobile instant messenger on hemodialysis patient`s knowledge, self-efficacy, self-care behavior and physiological indices. Methods: A non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants consisted of 38 patients who had a regular hemodialysis of Seoul National University Hospital. They were assigned to one of two groups; an experimental group (n = 19) that had self-care intervention for 8 weeks and a control groups (n = 19) that had routine hemodialysis treatment. The data collection was conducted from September 5, 2022 to October 29, 2022. The date were analyzed by Chi-square test, Independent t-test, and Fisher`s exact test using SPSS Win 29 program. Results: There was a significant difference in self-efficacy (t = 3.42, p = .002) between experimental and control groups. There was no significant differences between the two groups in knowledge (t = 0.80, p = .428), self-care behavior (t = 0.09, p = .929), potassium (t = -0.82 p = .416), phosphorus (t = -0.03, p = .974), weight gain (t = 0.16, p = .867). Conclusion: Based on above results, it was verified that self-care intervention in this study was an effective indicator in improving the self-efficacy. There is a requirement to formulate comprehensive interventions capable of enhancing various indicators.

South Korean Early Cancer Patients’ Perceptions of Difficulties in Fighting Their Disease: A Q Methodological Approach

This study applied the Q methodology to explore breast cancer patients’ perceived difficulties in their fight against the disease. We used literature analysis and in-depth interviews and selected 162 statements for the Q population. Then, we chose 40 universal and representative statements for the Q samples from the Q population. The P sample included 13 breast cancer patients in the early stage of the disease who participated in the Q sorting. We interviewed the study participants with high factor weights by type of P sample. The study’s results showed three types of breast cancer patients’ perceptions of difficulties in the initial fight against the disease. Type 1 showed ‘fear of the future’, Type 2 showed ‘helplessness against what cannot be controlled’, and Type 3 showed ‘frustration due to difficulties in role performance.’ Based on these results, we discuss the characteristics, meanings, and significance of individual types of breast cancer patients’ perceptions of the disease, including suggestions for follow-up studies.
