A concept analysis of self‐leadership: The “bleeding edge” in nursing leadership

Abstract: Aim: To explore the concept of self-leadership in nursing. Self-leadership, while frequently referenced, has not been clearly defined in either the literature or within nursing.Design: Common language sources were reviewed, along with literature searched from 2017 to 2019 using seven electronic databases: CINAHL, EbscoHost, Sabinet, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, Nexus, and Academic Complete. Database searches yielded 10 articles.Review Methods: Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis was modified, as suggeste… Show more

“…Significantly, we discovered that self-leadership and clinical learning environments indirectly influenced nursing professionalism through their associations with academic satisfaction and clinical competency. As suggested by previous research (Han, 2018;Ntshingila et al, 2021;van Dorssen-Boog et al, 2020), nursing students with higher self-leadership skills are more likely to achieve their goals to increase personal effectiveness. In other words, selfleadership can help student to be more effective in the practice environment, which can positively affect career preparation behavior (van Dorssen-Boog et al, 2020).…”

“…In contrast to clinical learning environments and academic satisfaction, which are considered learning‐related factors, ego‐resilience and self‐leadership represent internal or personal attributes that tend to be relatively stable and can continue to develop throughout one's adulthood (Ntshingila et al, 2021). Notably, the average scores for ego‐resilience and self‐leadership in this study were not particularly high, standing at 3.69 and 3.66 out of 5, respectively.…”

“…Empirical referents demonstrate the occurrence of a concept through its existence or presence ( Walker & Avant, 2019 ). Although Walker and Avant (2019) argue that empirical referents are not tools to measure the concept, several researchers identified tools as possible means to measure and demonstrate the concept under analysis ( Mosed et al., 2021 ; Ntshingila et al., 2021 ; Sharifi et al., 2019 ). Through concept analysis, the absence of quantitative measures for transcultural nursing leadership was identified.…”

“…Through selfleadership, nurse educators should be able to role model accepting responsibility for their behaviours and outcomes to colleagues and students. [9] Although self-leadership has been widely researched in other disciplines such as sports, teaching, business and management, Ntshingila et al's [14] study established that the self-leadership concept is poorly understood in nursing, and propose that the concept's meaning and values require further investigation. Matahela's [15] integrative literature review established that the meaning of self-leadership in an NEI context was not clearly elucidated, and recommend that further concept exploration and description, from nurse educators themselves in an NEI setting should be conducted, using exploratory methods including interviews.…”
