Show more

“…fasciatus has flexible feeding habit according to the availability of resources (Vilella et al 2002, Wolff et al 2009, Manna et al 2012, the results demonstrated that it was predominantly sustained by terrestrial food resources, indicating the importance of the riparian vegetation in these aquatic environments. Researches claim that riparian vegetation is of fundamental importance to streams (Pusey & Arthington 2003, Abilhoa et al 2008, and its removal causes serious impacts on the integrity of fish communities in tropical streams that depend on allochthonous resources (Angermeier & Karr 1983, Bojsen & Barriga 2002, like that of A. aff. fasciatus.…”

“…Most small-sized Atlantic rainforest characins are omnivorous and insectivorous (Costa, 1987;Sabino & Castro, 1990;Aranha et al, 1998;Vitule et al, 2008), and in small to mid-order tropical streams, several fish species feed primarily on allochthonous food material, such as terrestrial insects (Costa, 1987;Allan, 1995;Casatti & Castro, 1998;Aranha et al, 1998;Sabino & Zuanon, 1998;Abilhoa et al, 2008). In the present study, Hollandichthys multifasciatus was found to feed on autochthonous (mainly oligochaetes) and allochthonous (plants and terrestrial insects) material, and its feeding habit can be characterized as omnivorous, due to the high importance of oligochaetes, terrestrial insects and plants in the stomach contents.…”

“…This pattern is explained by its geographical isolation from the rest of the fish fauna of the Paraná River basin (Garavello et al, 1997). Assemblages of fish in streams of the Iguaçu River basin contain between six and 10 species (Abilhoa et al, 2008), and the basin as a whole contains about 130 species . This diversity is low compared to other streams or even to other tributaries of similar order in other stretches of the Paraná River basin (Langeani et al, 2007;Delariva & Silva, 2013).…”
