Sunshades may influence the acoustics of a building. As there are many ways to design external sunshades that are climatically efficient, it is important to consider the acoustical effect of their geometry as well. For this purpose, Acoustical Performance of Sunshades (APS), a preliminary computerized model was developed, allowing acoustical evaluations of different geometries of climatically satisfying sunshades. The evaluation is performed in three stages (i) calculating indoor noise levels caused by an exposed window, (ii) designing sunshades using another computerized model, SUNSHADES, and (iii) calculating noise levels after applying sunshades. The model gives a general acoustic evaluation using well known basic acoustical formulae, with a focus on combining climate and acoustics in the design of sunshades. A case study of horizontal sunshades is presented. Results show that the geometry of the sunshade affects the noise levels in a room and that some sunshades may reduce noise levels while others slightly increase them.
