A Computational Method of Active Earth Pressure from Finite Soil Body

Abstract: Nowadays, Coulomb and Rankine earth pressure theories have been widely applied to solve the earth pressure on a retaining structure. However, both of the theories established on the basis of the semi-infinite space assumption are not suitable for calculating the earth pressure from finite soil body. Therefore, this paper focuses on a theoretical study about the active earth pressure from finite soil body. Firstly, a common calculation model of finite soil body is established according to the results of previou… Show more

“…Bang (1985) believed that there is a linear relationship between the mobilized internal friction and displacement, so he first derived the formulation of the non-limit active earth pressure in cohesionless soil. Based on Bang' study, Chang (1997) and Wang et al (2015) constructed an empirical distribution mode of mobilized internal friction when the horizontal displacement (s) at the top of the wall exceeded the critical displacement (sa). In practice, the relationship is not linear between the mobilized internal friction and displacement (Liu 2014;Chen et al 2019).…”

“…These calculated methods of the lateral earth pressure considering the displacement mainly utilize a fitting method of measured data (Mei et al 2009;Ni et al 2018), a geotechnical parameter substitution method (Xu et al 2013;Wang et al 2015), and a linear model (Bang 1985;Golam et al 2015), but the arching effect is hardly still considered in these methods.…”

“…Hu et al studied the non-limit active earth pressure of retaining wall by thin-layer element method and obtained the theoretical formula of lateral coefficient, resultant force and action point of earth pressure [8]. Based on the calculation method of Bang's active earth pressure, Wang et al proposed an improved calculation method of non-limit active earth pressure considering the influence of wall displacement [9]. On the basis of the stress-strain concept, Chen et al studied the non-linear relationship between wall displacement and internal friction angle of soil and soil-wall external friction angle, and a theoretical calculation method of non-limit earth pressure was proposed considering the effect of retaining wall displacement [10].…”
