“…Metal phosphates are promising candidates for high-power SHG crystals because of their wide optical transparency with short absorption edges. However, the tetrahedral (PO 4 ) 3– group shows only small structural anisotropy, which usually leads to materials with a small birefringence and non-phase-matchable SHG properties. , Like PO 4 -based compounds, metal germanates and sulfates are also based on less anisotropic (GeO 4 ) 4– or (SO 4 ) 2– tetrahedral units, hence most metal germanates and sulfates display only a weak SHG effect and small birefringence, hampering their practical application in high-powered laser devices. To overcome these problems, highly polarizable cations such as Hg 2+ and Bi 3+ in severely distorted coordination geometries can be introduced into these systems.…”
