Abstract:The purpose of this study was to show relationships among the levels of essential metals (zinc, iron, sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium) and phenolic acids (caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic, gallic, rosmarinic and syringic) in commercial herbs (lemon balm, thyme, rosemary, mint, sage and angelica) and spices (caraway, lovage, hyssop and oregano). In the herbs higher quantities of metals and phenolic compounds were found than in spices. All plants contained high levels of calcium, potassium and rosmarinic acid, but low levels of zinc and gallic acid. By using principal component and hierarchical cluster analyses several clusters were identified grouping samples originating from a plant of a particular botanical species. Multivariate analysis has also shown that the contents of phenolic acids had a stronger impact on the scattering of herbs and spices than the metals levels. Furthermore, statistically significant correlations were found between calcium and ferulic, gallic, rosmarinic and syringic acids as well as between zinc and sodium and caffeic acid. This suggests co-operate between these biologically active constituents in metabolic processes occurring in plants.

SummaryRegardless of its highly valuable nutritive composition, goat's milk is less preferred by consumers due to its specific sensory characteristics that are very often regarded as undesirable. On the other hand, traditional medicinal plants from Lamiaceae family, due to their rich bioactive composition, especially polyphenols, and desirable aroma profile, can be used to enhance and improve bioactive and sensory properties of food. In the present study nutritively valuable beverages were produced by enrichment of goat's milk with medicinal plant extracts derived from the Lamiaceae family and stabilized by homogenization with high intensity ultrasound treatment. The impact of plant species (lemon balm, mint, lavender, rosemary and sage) and ultrasound treatment duration (5 or 10 min) on the physicochemical, bioactive and sensory characteristics of enriched beverages was evaluated. The addition of plant extracts to goat's milk significantly increased the concentration of bioactive components (rosmarinic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and luteolin derivatives), in dependence of the added plant extract. The prolongation of the ultrasound homogenization markedly decreased the fat globule size and thus beneficially affected the product stability. Apart from the achieved bioactive enrichment and stability, the developed beverages exhibited significantly improved sensory properties in comparison to plain goat's milk, with the highest overall acceptability determined for samples enriched with mint and rosemary.

Context National statistical reports in Jordan indicate a decrease in the total fertility rate along with a parallel increase in contraceptive use. The folkloric use of medicinal herbs in gynecological disorders has been growing in Jordan, despite of deficient reports on the evidence-based safety and efficacy of these practices. Objective The aim of this comprehensive article is to review medicinal plants with claimed ethnonpharmacological usage in various gynecological and pregnancy-related issues in Jordan, and to assess their evidence-based pharmacological studies as well as their phytochemistry. Methods The published literature was surveyed using Google Scholar entering the terms ''ethnopharmacology AND Jordan AND infertility AND gynecology OR gestation''. We included ethnopharmacological surveys in Jordan with available full-text. Results Twelve articles were reviewed. Plant species which are commonly used for female gynecological issues such as Artemisia monosperma Del. and A. herba-alba Asso. (Asteraceae) have been found to exert an antifertility effect. Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae) and Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad. (Cucurbitaceae) had antifertility effects in male rats, but Nigella sativa oil L. (Ranunculaceae) and Cinnamon zeylanicum J. Presl (Lauraceae) were found to enhance it. Conclusion Using plants for gynecological disorders is a common practice in Jordan. Many of them, whether utilised for gynecological or non-gynecological conditions equally, were found to have detrimental effects on female or male fertility. Thus, couples planning pregnancy should be discouraged from the consumption of these herbs. Further local studies are warranted to confirm the appreciable beneficial pharmacological effects and safety of these plants. ARTICLE HISTORY
