A comprehensive review of the application of probiotics and postbiotics in oral health

Abstract: Oral diseases are among the most common diseases around the world that people usually suffer from during their lifetime. Tooth decay is a multifactorial disease, and the composition of oral microbiota is a critical factor in its development. Also, Streptococcus mutans is considered the most important caries-causing species. It is expected that probiotics, as they adjust the intestinal microbiota and reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in the human intestine, can exert their health-giving effects, especial… Show more

“…The results demonstrated all the tested LAB have a positive effect in the containment of pathogen growth but only some of them induce a substantial reduction in this parameter; furthermore, the preventive model activity resulted more effective than the treatment assay. As highlighted by a recent review, probiotic bacteria may stimulate an immune response against pathogens, inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause dental cavities and periodontal diseases, and preventing inflammation and damage to tissue in the oral cavity [44].…”

“…Orthodontic patients may benefit from probiotics to prevent the development of white spot problems brought on by tooth enamel decalcification. In particular, Streptococcus mutans , recognized as the main cause of dental caries, is more prevalent in the plaque of people receiving orthodontic therapy than in the plaque of people not receiving it [ 14 , 15 ].…”

“…Data from randomized clinical trials also suggest that probiotics influence caries development, especially with supplemented milk or reconstituted milk powder. This influence may be attributed to modifications in biofilm/saliva metabolic and/or immunologic processes, including but not limited to, reduced extracellular matrixrelated enzymatic activity, increased salivary buffering capacity, and enhanced production of defense factors such as IgA or HNP1 [16,17].…”
