Abstract-The paper presents an indoor testbed evaluation of a multi-hop IEEE 802.15.4e Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) sensor network, operating in 2.4 GHz band. First goal of the evaluation is to assess the perspectives of TSCH, as a more reliable version of IEEE 802.15.4, for meter reading applications in a Smart Grid. Secondly, we compare the network performance for two medium access schemes: contention-based and contention-free. We model two automatic meter reading applications, representing regular metering readings and alarm reporting. With this model, we have collected eight measurement data sets for different interference and load conditions. Based on the data sets, link-and end-to-end reliability, and end-to-end delay are analyzed. Our results point out that the delay constraints can be satisfied. However, channel hopping is insufficient for meeting the reliability requirements, and additional mechanisms to couple with high link-layer losses are required.

Wireless networks are regarded as a promising candidate for condition monitoring systems of large-scale wind turbines due to the design flexibility, easy deployment, and reduced installation cost. This article investigates different data aggregation approaches of wireless-based architectures for the internal monitoring of a large-scale wind turbine. The main objective is to construct a wireless internal network inside the wind turbine nacelle, for collecting sensing data from different parts and transmitting the data to a remote control center through a wireless external network that serves the turbine towers of the wind farm. The proposed wireless network architectures consist of wireless sensor nodes, coordinator nodes, and a front-end device. The designs of the wireless-based architectures involve choices of physical components, sensor types, sampling rate, and data rate. Wi-Fi is a promising technology that is considered for the wind turbine internal network in this work. Through simulations, the network performance is evaluated with regard to end-to-end delay for different data aggregation approaches of wireless-based architectures.

Various communication systems have been used in distribution systems according to their purpose and are being developed for new applications. There are many applications in distribution area and we will be able to see more in the near future. Because distribution systems have tons of components and the components are scattered, the systems are more complicated than transmission systems and its prestage systems. There is no perfect solution for communication in distribution systems, but the optimized solution may be suggested by reviewing communication requirements. Possible communication solutions will be introduced and suggested according to applications in distribution area in the standpoint of the utility.
