A Comprehensive Review of Power System Stabilizers

Abstract: This paper presents a current literature review (from the years 2017–2022) on issues related to the application of power system stabilizers (PSSs) for damping electromechanical swings in power systems (PSs). After the initial selection of papers found in the databases used, over 600 publications were qualified for this review, of which 216 were subjected to detailed analysis. In the review, issues related to the following problems are described: applications of classic PSSs, applications of new stabilizer stru… Show more

“…In the dynamic stability approach, a conventional generator has damping and inertia properties that are important in dampening the oscillation and returning the system responses to its reference point when a minor disturbance occurs [6]. The additional controller, the Power System Stabilizer (PSS), is usually dispatched to add damping properties [7]. PSS can increase the stability limits by regulating the excitation of the generator.…”

“…Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) become the two most popular algorithms in controller parameter optimizations [7]. Nowadays, metaheuristic algorithms have rapidly developed with countless inspirations in the world and it has been implemented in modern power systems, including for controlling parameters in PSS or VI cases.…”

“…The power system with PSS can tackle the small-signal oscillation (usually occurs in 0.1 to 3 Hz) effectively [12]. The PSS still exists due to its instant effect to enhance dynamic stability [13]. PSS performance in enhancing stability is based on controlling parameters that must be tuned optimally.…”

“…The left side of ( 35) is the minimal control voltage available at the control frequency 𝜔 , whereas the right one represents the maximal instantaneous voltage drop on the transient rotor stray inductance 𝐿 at the highest rotor current slope. The combination of ( 33) and (35) shows that given the current dynamic, the DC-link voltage and the magnetizing flux linkage, the higher the rotor speed the smaller the control voltage available for controlling the rotor currents.…”
