China's urbanization has resulted in significant changes in agricultural land use. However, understanding of the linkages between urbanization and fertilizer use intensity is limited. Using county-level panel data for Henan Province, 1995Province, -2008 and panel econometric models, we investigate the impact of urbanization and other socioeconomic factors on fertilizer use intensity, with a focus on the two key processes related to urbanization-shrinking agricultural land area and increasing urban wages. Our results show that declining agricultural land per capita is associated with greater fertilizer use intensity. Urban wages is positively correlated with fertilizer use intensity. We also find that GDP per capita and per capita expenditure of government for agriculture both positively contribute to the increase of fertilizer use intensity, which is consistent with expectations. Our results imply that other than land conversion, urbanization contains some positive influences on land use sustainability. However, on the other hand, urbanization contributes to agriculture-based environmental pollution by increasing the level of fertilizer use in agricultural production.

Approval: 10-26-2015 ABSTRACT Objective: understand how farmers identify positive and negative impacts of family farming work on the environment and conserve the environmental health. Method: a qualitative study with 129 farmers from Ilha dos Marinheiros, Rio Grande, Brazil. Secondary data and recorded interviews were used in this study, with subsequent analysis performed by Bardin and NVivo10, both based on Enrique Leff's cultural rationality. Results: the positive impacts included food production with responsibility, work appreciation, and the correct, minimum or inexistent insertion of agrochemicals. The negative aspects included excessive and incorrect use of agrochemicals and absent farming knowledge. Conclusion: environmental conservation consisted in reducing impacts that could have a negative effect on health, while performing work activities. RESUMO Objetivo: compreender como os trabalhadores agricultores identifi cam os impactos positivos e negativos do trabalho agrícola familiar no ambiente e conservam a saúde ambiental. Foram utilizados dados secundários e entrevistas gravadas, com posterior análise de Bardin e NVivo10, ambos embasados na racionalidade cultural (Enrique Leff). Resultados: constaram, entre os impactos positivos, a geração de alimentos com responsabilidade, a valorização do trabalho, a correta, mínima ou nula inserção dos agrotóxicos. Como aspectos negativos, o uso excessivo e incorreto dos agrotóxicos e a ausência de conhecimentos para agricultar. Conclusão: a conservação do ambiente consistiu na redução de suas agressões durante o trabalho, as quais podem comprometer a saúde. Como aspectos negativos, el uso excesivo de agroquímicos y la falta de conocimiento sobre la actividad agrícola. Conclusión: la preservación del ambiente se enfocó en reducir su agresión durante el trabajo. Agredir el ambiente puede comprometer la salud.

Most city agglomerations of developing countries face water shortages and pollution due to population growth and industrial aggregation. To meet such water security challenges, policy makers need to evaluate water use efficiency at the regional or basin level because the prosperity of city agglomerations is indispensable to the sustainable development of the region or basin. To solve the issue, this paper adopts a non-directional distance function within the framework of environmental production technology to measure water use efficiency. Based on the distance between actual water use efficiency and the ideal efficiency, it calculates the potential reduction space of water input and pollutants by slack adjustment. Added to the Malmquist index, it forms a non-radial Malmquist water use performance index, which can be divided into technological change and technical efficiency change, to measure dynamic water use efficiency. Further, water use efficiency change is analyzed from the perspectives of technological improvement and institutional construction. Bohai Bay city agglomeration, a typical water-deficient city agglomeration in China, is taken as a case study, and data on water resource, environment, and economy from 2011 to 2014 have been used. In conclusion, there is much space for water use efficiency improvement on the whole. However, even having considered potential reduction space of water input and pollutant discharge under current environmental production technology, it is still not enough to support the city agglomeration's sustainable development. To relieve current potential water safety hazards, not only technical improvement but also institution innovation for highly efficient water use should be kept accelerating in Bohai Bay region. In terms of urban water management in developing countries, the research conclusion is of theoretical and practical significance.
