A Comprehensive Protocol to Diagnose and Treat Pain of Muscular Origin May Successfully and Reliably Decrease or Eliminate Pain in a Chronic Pain Population

Abstract: A protocol incorporating an easily reproducible electrical stimulus to diagnose a muscle causing pain in a region of the body followed by an injection technique that involves the entirety of the muscle, and post injection restoration of muscle function, can successfully eliminate or significantly reduce regional pain present for years.

“…A previous paper noted the absence of reliable assessments and treatment modules for muscle‐generated pain, and presented a study with a month follow‐up of the protocol applied in this study . Persistent posttreatment pain reduction and decreased interference in activities would support the utility of the protocol.…”

“…The previous study suggested that palpation to identify trigger points (TrPs) is, in practice, often not administered as suggested in authoritative literature, and has been shown to lack interrater reliability., The concept of TrPs themselves as the major source of muscle pain has been challenged .…”

“…New is not necessarily better. ' Marcus et al (2010) points out that he currently uses the Kraus exercise program in his chronic pain treatment protocol. This system (of what we might now regard as non-specific exercise) was developed in the 1950s and reduced or eliminated back pain in 80% of those undertaking them.…”

“…We postulate that MP to identify a muscular source of regional pain is an imprecise process as it is done on a sedentary/resting muscle and only identifies a low‐pressure pain threshold. The MPDD actually stimulates the muscle to contract, as in vivo , deforming the TrPs and stimulating the density of muscle nociceptors found in the bony tendon attachments [12]. This study evaluated the accuracy of the MPDD vs MP in determining which muscle(s) causes pain in a region of the body of which the patient complains.…”
