A Comprehensive Behavioural Assessment of Curcumin’s Effect on Inflammatory and Non-Inflammatory Pain in Mice

Abstract: The present study aimed to assess the effect of oral curcumin administration on different types of experimental pain and to evaluate its effect on motor activity and coordination. The study was conducted on mice were divided in 4 groups and which received different doses of curcumin through gavage or olive oil (control). Tail Flick, Hot Plate, Rota Rod and Activity Cage tests were performed at baseline and 30, 60, 120, 180 and 240 minutes after administration. The most efficient dose (120 mg/kg bw) was chosen … Show more

“…From this perspective, the search for new natural or synthetic compounds/drugs with anti-inflammatory effects against sepsis is of great importance. Curcumin is a yellow polyphenol derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities [ 14 , 15 ], frequently studied in the treatment of endocrine, respiratory, and liver disorders [ 16 ]. This compound has also been described for the treatment of several inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease [ 16 ] and rheumatoid arthritis [ 17 ].…”

“…Modern treatments, dynamic or intrusive, such as step-up and treat-to-target schemes (recommended by the EULAR -European League Against Rheumatism) built on therapy adjustment until LDA or remission is gained, are feasible and consensual objective for RA patients [3]. It is well known that DMARD therapy is begun as soon as the diagnosis is confirmed [1]. The body of evidence has grown in the last decade, particularly for the targeted synthetic (ts) DMARDs inhibiting Janus Kinase inhibitor (JAKi), novel biological (b) DMARDs aiming acknowledged pathways and trials comparing bDMARDs to other bDMARDs or tsDMARDs.…”

“…For example, turmeric (Curcuma longa Linn) is a member of the Zingiberaceae family and is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, coming from India, South East Asia and Indonesia [2]. Turmeric is one of the most popular medicinal herbs, with a wide range of pharmacological activities such as antioxidant [3], antimicrobial, anti-malarial [4], anti-inflammatory [5], anti-angiogenic, anti-tumoural [6] and antiaging [7] properties. The pharmacological activity of turmeric has been attributed mainly to curcuminoids, consisting of curcumin and two related derivatives (e.g.…”
