A compositional modelling and analysis framework for stochastic hybrid systems

Abstract. Service-oriented systems interconnect with other systems in a time critical manner, making their performance vital. For this purpose, we propose an automated performance evaluation approach for service-oriented systems which includes both performance measurement and prediction. The approach makes use of the iDSL language, a domain specific language tailored to modeling service-oriented systems, and the iDSL toolchain to evaluate iDSL models, as follows. First, discrete-event simulation yields many performance artifacts, e.g., latency breakdown charts, cumulative distribution graphs, and latency bar charts. Second, timed automata-based model checking yields absolute latency bounds. Third, probabilistic timed automata-based model checking leads to exact latency distributions for each service. We successfully validated our approach; several case studies on interventional X-ray systems displayed similar measured and predicted outcomes.

Abstract-In this paper we propose a formal, model-checking based procedure to evaluate the survivability of fluid critical infrastructures. To do so, we introduce the Stochastic Time Logic (STL), which allows to precisely express intricate state-based and until-based properties for an important class of hybrid Petri nets. We present an efficient model checking procedure which recursively traverses the underlying state-space of the hybrid Petri net model, and identifies those regions (subsets of the discrete-continuous state space) that satisfy STL formulae. A case study studying the survivability of a water refinery and distribution plant shows the feasibility of our approach.

This paper reports on the modelling and analysis of a microgrid with wind, microturbines, and the main grid as generation resources. The microgrid is modelled as a parallel composition of various stochastic hybrid automata. Extensive simulation runs of the behaviour of the main individual microgrid components give insight into the complex dynamics of the system and provide useful information to determine adequate parameter settings. The analysis of the microgrid focuses on determining the probability of linear temporal logic properties expressed in the logic LTL, using the statistical model checker Uppaal-SMC.
