A complementary method for automated detection of microaneurysms in fluorescein angiography fundus images to assess diabetic retinopathy

Abstract: Early detection of microaneurysms (MAs), the first sign of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), is an essential first step in automated detection of DR to prevent vision loss and blindness. This study presents a novel and different algorithm for automatic detection of MAs in fluorescein angiography (FA) fundus images, based on Radon transform (RT) and multi-overlapping windows. This project addresses a novel method, in detection of retinal land marks and lesions to diagnose the DR. At the first step, optic nerve head (O… Show more

“…According to the National Screening Committee standards all the images are captured by using a TOPCON (TRC-50EX), 50 Mydriatic retinal camera. The acquired image resolution is 2896 × 1944 TIFF format [34], [35]. The second database, DRIVE, consisting of 40 images with image resolution of 768 × 584 pixels in which 33 cases did not have any sign of DR and 7 ones showed signs of early or mild DR with a 45 FOV.…”

“…Results showed that this approach is competitive with selection-based ensemble approaches and outperforms other individual detectors. Tavakoli et al [26] presented a different algorithm for MA detection in FAs based on Radon transform (RT) and multi-overlapping windows. At the first step, the optic nerve head (ONH) was detected and masked.…”

“…The projection of a two dimensional region onto a rotated axis with respect to the original axis is a line integral evaluated along the direction of rotated axis . The Radon Transform of is the line integral of parallel to the axis and perpendicular to the axis with the last axis having an angle with respect to axis [26], .…”

“…2,8 One of the most important steps in the automated screening of DR is the detection of microaneurysms (MAs) . 9 MAs are small outpouchings in capillary vessels. 10 They are amongst the first signs of the DR. 11 Detection of MAs is the main step in the automated detection of DR screening systems.…”
