A Comparison of Voltage Stability Indices for Placing Shunt FACTS Controllers

Abstract: Location of shunt compensation devices is important for the enhancement of the voltage stability for practical power systems. This paper presents a comparison of several voltage stability indices in electric power system to identify the weakest bus/ area of the system. Shunt FACTS controller is introduced at the weakest bus in IEEE 14-bus test system and its effectiveness is assessed by comparing voltage profile and loading margin enhancement. Various line stability indices are also compared with and without s… Show more

“…There have been interesting research work on modeling stochastic nature of wind generators in optimal power flow setting and statistically characterizing the demand for network state estimation computation through Gaussian expectation measurement [22][23][24]. This paper expands the well-known voltage index V/V0 for balanced three-phase systems [25][26] and defines an improved positive-sequence voltage index of Vcollapse/Vno-load to identify the weakest buses in multiphase distribution networks. For the first time an iterative algorithm is proposed to accurately increase the DG penetration in unbalanced multiphase networks in order to improve grid losses while considering MLF and bus voltage limits.…”

“…Calculation of Stability indices is very successful method to find out the critical bus and line of the system. Using power flow of these indices can be calculated and line having maximum value of the index is the most critical line referred to that bus [10]. Different multiple techniques have been implemented in previous research papers to find out the best possible location of these devices using stability indices but they involve many complexities in power flow solution and calculations of indices [11].…”
