A Comparison of Three-Stage DEA and Artificial Neural Network on the Operational Efficiency of Semi-Conductor Firms in Taiwan

Abstract: In this study, the data envelopment analysis (DEA), three-stage DEA (3SDEA) and artificial neural network (ANN) are employed to measure the technical efficiency of 29 semi-conductor firms in Taiwan. Estimated results show that there are significant differences in efficiency scores among DEA, 3SDEA and ANN analysis. The advanced setting of the three stages mechanism of DEA does show some changes in the efficiency scores between DEA and ANN approaches. We further find that the environmental factor is still a sig… Show more

“…The findings were, analyzed using a Cobb-Douglas production function, which helped to determine the individual operating parameters driving variances in farming efficiency. Liu, et al [2013] in this study a three-stage DEA method and artificial neural network (ANN) are, used to assess the technical efficiency of 29 Taiwanese semi-conductor businesses. The estimated results reveal that there are considerable differences in efficiency scores between the DEA, three-stage DEA and ANN analyses.…”

“…This study evaluated the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing firms listed at the Indonesian Stock Exchange. Liu, Chen, Chiu, and Kuo (2013) applied DEA, three-stage DEA (3SDEA), and artificial neural network (ANN) to measure the technical efficiency of 29 semi-conductor firms in Taiwan. Huang, Chiu, Ting, and Lin (2012) used the hybrid DEA model, in which the proportionate inputs are evaluated with a radial measure, and the nonproportionate inputs are evaluated with a nonradial measure in order to evaluate the impact of marketing expense on the efficiency of Taiwan's international tourist hotels.…”

“…Athanassopoulos and Curram first introduced the idea of the combination of neural networks (NNs) and DEA for classification and/or prediction. Other papers that presented the benefits of combining DEA and NN are Liu et al, Liao et al, Santin, Santin et al and Wang . Azadeh et al proposed a highly unique flexible ANN algorithm to measure and rank scores of Iranian steam power.…”
