A Comparison of the Sensitivity and Fecal Egg Counts of the McMaster Egg Counting and Kato-Katz Thick Smear Methods for Soil-Transmitted Helminths

Abstract: BackgroundThe Kato-Katz thick smear (Kato-Katz) is the diagnostic method recommended for monitoring large-scale treatment programs implemented for the control of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in public health, yet it is difficult to standardize. A promising alternative is the McMaster egg counting method (McMaster), commonly used in veterinary parasitology, but rarely so for the detection of STH in human stool.Methodology/Principal FindingsThe Kato-Katz and McMaster methods were compared for the detection o… Show more

“…95% CI 14.3-66.7 mg). 19 These points corroborate with the observation that for all three species of STHs, the FECs obtained by Kato- Katz and McMaster are considerably higher when compared with FLOTAC. 14,35 The differences observed in the ERRs of T. trichiura by the three methods have important implications for assessing anthelminthic drug efficacy.…”

“…18 The McMaster technique has been proposed as a valid alternative to the Kato-Katz for technique monitoring large-scale anthelminthic treatment programmes in humans. 19,20 The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of three copromicroscopic methods (Kato-Katz, FLOTAC and McMaster) for estimating drug efficacy against STH infections. The study was implemented on Pemba Island, where STHs are highly endemic and large-scale control efforts are underway.…”

“…It is quick and the eggs are floated free of debris before counting. In addition, the method is robust and accurate (Levecke et al, 2011). The method was used without any modification.…”

“…Laveche, et al (17), compararon cualitativa y cuantitativamente los métodos de McMaster y la Kato-Katz, y encontraron resultados similares a los del presente artículo, en que el método de KatoKatz de la OMS fue más sensible para la detección de A. lumbricoides y, para T. trichiura y Uncinaria sp., las diferencias no fueron significativas.…”
