“…The potential of the EPPS as a research instrument has been sanctioned in several respects by Bernadin & Jessor (1957), Buros (1959), Klett (1957), and Zuckerman (1958). It proved useful in discriminating among aspirants to or workers in various occupational groups in studies reported by Adams, Blood, and Taylor (1958), Garrison & Scott (1961), Lang (1956), and Merrill (1960). It served a descriptive purpose for Jackson & Guba (1957), and Saltz & Allen (1961) and functioned predictively for Medley (1961).…”

“…Unconscious motives leading to the choice of a career in teaching have been investigated through studies of the personal needs of teachers (Jackson & Guba, 1957;Lang, 1959;Symonds, 1943). Motives leading to teaching specialties have also been studied (Garrison & Scott, 1961;Ivanoff, Monroe, & Marita, 1966;Jones & Gottfried, 1966). Particular attention has been given to the difference in needs between elementary and secondary teachers; findings show that elementary teachers, mainly women, have greater needs for nurturance while secondary teachers have greater needs for achievement (Garrison & Scott, 1961;Lang, 1966;Roe, 1956).…”

“…The hypothesis presented here is that the grade level a teacher chooses to teach has special psychological significance for him. The only previous studies investigating teacher personality with respect to finer grade divisions than elementary and secondary are those of Garrison and Scott (1961), who found primary teachers have greater needs for nurturance than other teachers including intermediate teachers; and Amorata (1954), who studied a number of traits in teachers of Grades 4-8, grade by grade, and found variables related to self-control more consistent than variables related to social personality.…”

“…Scandrette (1962) also employed the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule to determine whether women students preparing to teach on the elementary level have different need patterns from students preparing to teach on the secondary level. Garrison and Scott (1961) used the same scale in a similar study.…”
