A Comparison of the Numerical Simulation and Experimental Investigation of the Flow Around a High Speed Train

Abstract: Numerical simulations of the turbulent flow surrounding a high speed train are carried out at SNCF (French Railways) using the commercial code Star CD. The numerical methodology developed consists in building the complete detailed topology of a train with basic blocks. The validation of the method is done through a comparison with wind tunnel experiments. A globally good agreement is found concerning the drag estimation of a short trainset. Predictions of mean streamwise velocity and turbulent kinetic energy s… Show more

“…Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) has been one of the most popular computational techniques used by researchers in recent times. It has been used very frequently to study the aerodynamics of a high-speed train in an open environment and has been proven as an accurate method [22,23]. There have been a few studies on the motion of trains through constrained spaces using RANS.…”

“…In 2002, an experimental and numerical investigation of air flow around a high-speed train was done by Paradot et al [3]. In this research, a high-speed train at French railways among a turbulent air flow was simulated, numerically using the commercial code Star CD.…”

“…A comparison between numerical and experimental simulation of air flow over a high-speed train was investigated (Paradot, 2002). A SNCF (French high-speed train) with high Reynolds number (almost 10 9 ) was used for aerodynamic analysis.…”
