A comparison of the long‐term results of crushing and crushing with intrinsic stripping techniques in concha bullosa surgery

Abstract: Crushing with intrinsic stripping is an effective and easy technique; when compared to crushing alone; this technique provides a significantly more decrease in middle concha volumes as demonstrated both by the CT and by endoscopic evaluations.

“…Furthermore, assessment of concha bullosa is not routinely included in surgeon-based checklists. 10 This may result in concha bullosa not being identified pre-operatively and therefore not addressed intra-operatively. The role of a convolutional neural network such as the one described in this study, which can accurately identify the presence of clinically relevant concha bullosa, therefore has excellent potential clinical utility.…”

“…Therefore, when concha bullosa is identified pre-operatively or intra-operatively in sinonasal surgery, it is typically addressed surgically, which has been demonstrated to aid nasal airflow and alleviate chronic rhinosinusitis. 8–10 As a result, various techniques are utilised to open the concha bullosa and reduce the bulkiness of the middle turbinate complex. These range from crushing, stripping, marsupialisation, and medial and lateral laminectomy to complete middle turbinectomy.…”

“…In addition, the nasal anatomy and physiology are more protected in this surgical intervention. 15,16 Koçak et al reported that the crushing technique was an effective treatment method in all CB types, which provided a sufficient reduction in middle concha volume, and did not cause any subjective deterioration in the perception of smell. 4 In the current study, the lateral turbinectomy method was preferred in the treatment of CB fully obstructing the nasal passage, and the crushing method was selected for cases where the CB did not fully obstruct the nasal passage.…”

“…Concha bullosa is caused by pneumatized middle turbinate, one of the anatomic variations of paranasal region (4,5). For the first time in 1893, was described by Zuckerkandl (6).…”
