Abstract: The relative efficacy of two short forms of the WAIS‐R with respect to accurate subtest profile scatter was examined (N = 50). The subtest scores of both the split‐half Satz‐Mogel (S‐M) short form and the criterion referenced Modified WAIS‐R (WAIS‐RM) short form were found to differ significantly from full length WAIS‐R subtest scores. The relative performance of two Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale‐Revised (WAIS‐R) short forms, the Satz‐Mogel item reduction technique (Adams, Smigielski, & Jenkins, 1984; Satz & Mogel, 1962) and the Silverstein (1982) subtest‐reduction technique, was examined for a group of psychiatric inpatients (N = 75). The two short forms were evaluated on several criteria, including their ability to predict the Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) using regression analysis, their reliability, and their total administration time. The standard error of estimates obtained in predicting the FSIQ were comparable for both short forms and resulted in a ± 7 confidence interval to achieve 90% accuracy.

The development of short forms of intelligence tests, especially of Wechsler's scales, has been a pastime of researchers and clinicians for decades. These short forms have usually been of the two- or four-subtest variety, but other variants such as Satz-Mogel split-half short forms have also been common. The literature is replete with proposed short forms and with controversies over their proper use, the statistical problems associated with validity coefficients when the short-form data are obtained from a complete administration of the test battery, and the logic of choosing subtests that are long to administer and score in view of the goal to reduce time. This article argues that the time has come to abandon short forms of intelligence tests in favor of brief tests such as the K-BIT, WASI, and WRIT, which are reliable, valid, well normed, and easy both to give and score.

Vlidity and Utility of WAIS-R and WISC-R Short Forms with Adolescents Recovering from Closed Head Injury

The WISC-R and WAIS-R are frequently used to assess intellectual functioning of adolescents who have sustained closed head injuries (CHI). The purpose of this study was to determine if a select-subtest (Two of Four Subtest) or select-item short form could be used with this population to accurately determine level of intellectual ability. The WISC-R/WAIS-R was administered to sixty-one adolescents who had recently sustained a CHI. Protocols were then rescored according to short form guidelines. There were no differences between Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores obtained from the full and abbreviated administrations and the majority of cases were classified correctly according to the Wechsler classification scheme. However, significant differences emerged between subtest scores derived from the full and short form approach. The use of abbreviated administrations as a screening device was supported. Profile analysis based upon the selected item short form or the use of these measures for diagnostic or treatment purposes is not justified.
