A comparison of the costs of ceftazidime therapy and gentamicin combinations in three UK hospitals

Abstract: This study compares the utilization costs of ceftazidime therapy with those of gentamicin in combination with other antibacterial drugs. The results show that the relatively high purchase cost of ceftazidime compared to combinations is more than counterbalanced by the additional materials used for drug administration and serum antibiotic assays, even when other drugs were combined with ceftazidime. The average drug and equipment costs were 230.13 pounds for ceftazidime regimens and 253.94 pounds for gentamicin… Show more

“…Patients receiving intravenous aminoglycosides and glycopeptides undergo serum concentration monitoring ( [17], and T. Elliott, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, personal communication, 1995), which cost £17.30 per assay at 1992/1993 prices [17]. The annual cost of therapeutic drug monitoring for these agents was calculated to be £352,800.…”

“…23 Time and motion studies often are used to determine the labor and material costs associated with the treatments. 24,25 The costs are calculated by multiplying the pharmacist's or nurse's wage rate by the preparation or administration time needed for each dose plus the costs of any materials needed to prepare or administer the treatment. Although this approach may be an improvement on the studies that evaluate only level 1 costs, studies that consider level 2 costs have many of the same limitations.…”
