A Comparison of Surface Deformation Measurement Methods for Slopes

Abstract: This study aimed to promote an efficient and reliable collection of deformation data for earthen slopes by comparing the Total Station (TS), Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS), and Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS)-based deformation measurement methods. The TS-based method was a two-person task with a longstanding “tried and true” reputation, and it provided acceptable results. However, it included a major portion of manual work in the field, potentially consuming extended time to obtain high-resolution data. The DSS… Show more

“…However, a common issue encountered with most models is their inability to generalize and adjust to diverse situations. In one study [34], researchers utilized Federated Learning (FL) to develop an IDS capable of addressing challenges posed by various automobile manufacturers (Data Diversity). Multiple car models, each with its own dataset of CAN data, were used to find common patterns while maintaining data privacy.…”

“…According to the data generation technique, data were collected from an internal gateway where a central gateway handled all the traffic, as shown in [34]. Introducing data could rapidly disrupt the behavior of the target vehicle.…”

“…He Liming et al [75] used a GNSS to collect landslides related to steep slopes of subgrade slopes, and the experiments showed that GNSS data have wide applicability. Song Chung R et al [76] used GNSS technology to monitor the slope with high plastic soil, and this method can provide an extremely high-resolution deformation profile. Tiwari et al [77] made three field visits to the site by using a GNSS, collected geodetic data, and built three digital elevation models based on this to estimate the movement of the landslide's steep slope.…”

“…The measure of effective surface deformation provides an effective method for characterizing slope movement, especially in areas prone to landslides. By analyzing critical slope behavior, engineers can predict the possibility of failure [5]. The analysis of slope movement can be achieved by comparison of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from different dates [6], [7].…”
