Full WISC-R evaluations of students who are referred to a gifted program, but who do not meet placement criteria, have become a drain on the resources of many school districts. A screening formula for gifted students, utilizing three WISC-R subtests (VO-BD-SI), was evaluated using traditional epidemiologic techniques. The screen was applied to the records of 200 students who had been referred for a gifted program and received complete WISC-R batteries. Screen results were compared to actual placement of the 2 0 subjects based on a WISC-R Full Scale, Verbal, or Performance IQ of 130 or more. Measures of sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of the screen were determined. The screen correctly detected the majority of gifted students and could have major implications in terms of cost effectiveness and professional time management.

This study investigated whether methylphenidate is effective in improving response inhibition in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Children with ADHD were compared with normally developing children on measures of response inhibition. Participants with ADHD were compared across two conditions--medicated and unmedicated. There was no significant difference between the inhibitory control of children with and without ADHD. Children with ADHD showed significant improvements in inhibitory control following methylphenidate. The findings of the present study contrast with previous studies which document reduced inhibitory control in ADHD, compared with normally developing children. Reports of methylphenidate improving functioning in children with ADHD are supported. Limitation and implications of the study are discussed.

Comparative validity of three Wechsler short forms for delinquents

Investigated the validity of Vocabulary‐Block Design short forms for the WISC‐R, WAIS, and WAIS‐R in a clinical population of 126 adjudicated male delinquents age 16 years. The difference between the means of each short form and its corresponding Full Scale IQ was small and nonsignificant. The correlations between each short form and corresponding Full Scale IQ ranged between 0.88 and 0.92 and therefore accounted for between 77% and 84% of the variance shared by the measures. The WAIS and WAIS‐R were superior of the WISC‐R in correctly classifying Ss by intelligence category. It was concuded that Wechsler short forms, especially the WAIS and WAIS‐R, are useful as screening devices for older delinquents, but inadequate for making individual treatment program decisions.
