A Comparison of Short Forms of the Intelligence Scale for Children - Revised in the Screening of Gifted Referrals

Abstract: A total of 142 full scale individual intelligence tests were rescored to compare the V and BD dyad of the WISC-R with the full scale WISC-R and the limen method of scoring of the S-B with the full scale S-B. Tests had been administered to students who had been referred for possible inclusion in a gifted program. The correlation of the limen short form and the full scale S-B was. 78 while the V and BD dyad and full scale WISC-R correlation was .92. Results suggest that the V and BD dyad of the WISC-R may be a u… Show more

“…Previous empirical studies (Karnes & Brown, 1981;Killian & Hughes, 1978) have shown that the VO-BD dyad and VO-BD-SI triad are the most effective subtests of the WISC-R for identifying student exceptionality. Few subtest combinations have the high correlation (r=0.92) that the VO-BD dyad has with FSIQ (Killian & Hughes, 1981).…”

“…The VO-BD subtest dyad also has been a useful screening device for superior students (Karnes & Brown, 1981;Killian & Hughes, 1978). The VO subtest is typified by verbal conceptualization, cognition, long-term memory, and degree of abstract thinking.…”

“…Full-scale IQ was estimated using a shortened version of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, UK (WISC-III UK, Wechsler, 1991), comprised of one verbal subtest (Vocabulary) and one performance subtest (Block Design). The reliability and validity of this short form is high (r = 0.906) (Sattler, 1992) and it is considered to be a good screening combination (Kilian & Hughes, 1978).…”
