A comparison of risk factors for habitual violence in pre‐trial subjects

Abstract: Objective: Pre‐trial referrals to the Valkenberg Hospital forensic unit over a 6‐month period were studied. Habitually violent offenders were compared with those with no history of violence. Methods:  Risk factors known to be associated with violent behaviour were elicited, i.e. demographics, behaviour during index offence (such as impulsivity, identity of victim, use of weapon, accomplices, intoxication, psychotic symptoms), psychiatric and family histories, history of suicide attempts, past child abuse, head… Show more

“…For a long time many surveys have confirmed an increased risk of violent behavior in patients with severe disease of the mind (Hodgins, Mednick, Brennan, Schulsinger, & Engberg, 1996;Lindqvist & Allebeck, 1990;Marzuk, 1996), evidence also confirmed by subsequent research (Kaliski, 2002;Swanson et al, 2002).…”

“…Un bon prédicteur de violences des patients psychiatriques sortis d'hôpital serait donc des antécédents de violences [65,118,122,124] ou des antécédents d'incarcération [148]. Ces antécédents de violences seraient notamment importants dans le risque de commettre un homicide [99] et l'aspect très impulsif d'un précédent crime [28], ou sa précocité [9], représenteraient les principaux facteurs de risques de récidive.…”

“…There is a wide literature about the risk factors of violent behavior. Firstly, several investigations denounced increasing risks in patients affected by serious mental pathologies (Lindqvist & Allebeck, 1990;Marzuk, 1996) in several sociocultural contexts (Lamb & Weimberger, 1998;Kaliski, 2002). In addition, researchers identified several risk factors that differently combined can significantly increase the probability of new violent acts.…”
