A Comparison of Pain, Pain Interference and Fatigue according to the Level of Physical Activity in the Elderly with Chronic Pain

Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate differences in pain, pain interference, and fatigue, according to the level of physical activity in the elderly with chronic pain. Methods: Data were collected between January and March 2011 from 116 elders with chronic pain living in community settings. The data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program for descriptive statistics, x 2 test, t-test, ANOVA and ANCOVA. “…Although the association of PA and the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders has been repeatedly described, few studies examined the association of PA with mental problems prospectively 23). In addition, the relationship between PA and the dimension of pain/discomfort was not significant in our study result, which was inconsistent with the previous study that reported PA level can influence pain, pain interference and fatigue in 116 elders with chronic pain 24). The inconsistency could result from the difference in study subjects, design and methods of PA measurement.…”

“…PA improves the HRQoL by improving physical function and lowering the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, thereby inducing fundamental health benefits 33 , as reported in earlier studies. An analysis of older adults 65 years and older in Korea showed that the physically active group had lower pain, pain interference, and fatigue than the inactive group 34 . HRQoL decreased linearly with decreasing PA, with participants showing weakened physical and mental health, including bodily pain, physical role limitation, and emotional role limitation 35 .…”
