A comparison of oral health related quality of life between complete and partial removable denture‐wearing older adults in Korea

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) between older Korean adults with complete and partial removable dentures using oral health impact profile (OHIP). A pool of 4250 Korean older adults was identified by random stratification by area from the sample cohort of Korean National Survey of Oral Health in the year of 2000. “…Edentulism is generally considered to have a negative impact on oral health, and is a commonly used indicator in high‐income countries (13). The importance of preserving teeth in good functional condition lay in being linked to a good health‐related quality of life (5, 20–26), while edentulism has been consistently associated with chronic disorders such as cancers in the digestive tract (27), cardiovascular disease (28) including hypertension (29) and poor nutritional status (30–33) or changes in food choices because of inherent dental/mastication limitations (34).…”

“…Consequently, measures of oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) have been developed as they are integral to assessing oral health as well as for planning oral health services . Some national oral health surveys have included the assessment of OHRQoL in addition to clinical oral disease assessment . The assessment of school‐aged children's OHRQoL was included in national oral health surveys of some countries .…”

“…In a previous study, the RPD wearers experienced a more adverse impact of the dentures on the OHRQoL than complete denture wearers. 22 Thus, complete denture wearers might be more accepting to the limitations of denture functions than RPD wearers. 9 Participants with more cleaning frequency and more usage times of their dentures (eating with dentures, sleeping with dentures in their mouth) have lower scores of OHIP and better OHRQoL.…”
