A comparison of methods to identify alcohol involvement in youth injury‐related emergency department presentation data

Abstract: ED data are useful sources of information for identification of high-risk sub-groups to target intervention opportunities, though it is not a reliable source of data for incidence or trend estimation in its current unstandardised form. Improving the accuracy and consistency of identification, documenting and coding of alcohol involvement at the point of data capture in the ED is the most desirable long-term approach to produce a more solid evidence base to support policy and practice in this field.

“…Although there is growing evidence for the reliability of text mining methods for identifying alcohol‐related presentations in ED databases [5–7,19], this method still relies on both the quality of the information provided by patients and the triage text entered by ED staff. Research is yet to determine the impact of the quality or completeness of nursing triage text on the reliability of text mining methods.…”

“…[12][13][14][15] Given that these text data are routinely recorded relatively widely throughout Australia and are not onerous in terms of data collection demands on clinical staff, evaluating methods for searching these data for specific injury surveillance purposes is valuable to inform the future development and use of ED text for injury surveillance in Australia.…”
