A Comparison of Methods for the Determination of Cation Exchange Capacity of Soils/Porównanie Metod Oznaczania Pojemności Wymiany Kationów I Sumy Kationów Wymiennych W Glebach

Abstract: Abstract:The object of this study was to compare the results obtained with four methods of determination of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and sum of exchangeable cations (Ca, Mg, K) in soils. One of these methods is Kappen's method and the others methods are based on different extracting reagents: sodium acetate (pH = 8.2), barium chloride and hexaamminecobalt(III) chloride. Values measured with barium ions and hexaamminecobalt(III) ions as index cations are very comparable and these two methods can be consid… Show more

“…22 Deionized water was added to the soil samples and levels of water-soluble cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + ) were estimated from the filtrate collected after 19 h of shaking. 23 Organic carbon present in the soil samples was estimated by the chromic acid wet digestion method. 24 Available nitrogen in the samples was determined after acid digestion by the micro-Kjeldahl method, 25 and available phosphorus in the soil samples was also estimated.…”

“…Soil particle distribution was determined with the hydrometer method [14]. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) for shooting range soil and SMSB was determined using USEPA Method [15]. Soil organic matter (SOM) was determined using the loss-on-ignition (LOI) method [16], and the soil organic carbon (SOC) was calculated using Equation 2 (3) where [metal] is the concentration of metal ion in digested solution, V is the volume of digested solution and m soil is the mass of soil sample (kg).…”
