A Comparison of Mathematical Tasks Types Used in Indonesian and Australian Textbooks Based on Geometry Contents

Abstract: This study examined the type of mathematical tasks in two Australian and two Indonesian mathematics textbooks for 7th-grade students. The quantitative data were collected from the coding results of the tasks in the textbooks. The tasks were coded based on six categories: the presentation forms, the cognitive requirements, the contextual features, the information provided, the number of steps required, and the numbers of answers. Both the similarities and differences in the mathematical tasks provided in the se… Show more

“…Mathematical knowledge represented in textbooks was the primary focus of recent studies (Abdullah & Shin, 2019;Hidayah & Forgasz, 2020;Miyakawa, 2017;Quiroz & Rodríguez, 2015;Wijayanti & Winsløw, 2017). Wijayanti and Winsløw (2017) developed a new method for textbook analysis based on praxeological reference models which focused on specific content.…”

“…The learning process should be designed to facilitate the acquisition, processing and imitation of information as well as developing new ideas so as to increase student competence (Rashidov, 2020). Nonetheless, a significant number of Indonesian textbooks solely feature exercises that demand students to discover solutions without the application of specific methodologies (Hidayah & Forgasz, 2020). In line with this, research by Fuadah et al, (2021) reveals that the problems in Indonesian textbooks are dominated by problems that only require procedural skills.…”

“…Wijaya (2015) argued that the lack of learning opportunities in Indonesian mathematics textbooks potentially caused Indonesian students to struggle to complete their tasks. On the other hand, in Indonesian textbooks, many assignments required students to find solutions without providing any procedures (Hidayah & Forgasz, 2020).…”
