A comparison of isoprene nitrate concentrations at two forest‐impacted sites

Abstract: [1] We report measurements of isoprene nitrates as part of the Southern Oxidants Study during the summer of 1999 at a rural/forest site in Tennessee. Average midday concentrations of the isoprene nitrates were $115 ppt. This is $10 times greater than the previously reported concentrations during the Program for Research on Oxidants: Photochemistry, Emissions, and Transport (PROPHET) study in 1998 at Pellston, Michigan, representing as much as 5% of NO y . Here we investigate the possible factors for the large … Show more

“…Ballschmitter and coworkers measured these compounds by chromatographic methods in remote areas (e.g., marine environments) where there were only very small concentrations (Fischer et al, 2000;Werner et al, 1999). Shepson and coworkers reported diurnal patterns for these compounds in forested regions in Michigan and Tennessee (Giacopelli et al, 2005;Grossenbacher et al, 2001Grossenbacher et al, , 2004 but focused mainly on the photochemical production from reactions of isoprene peroxy radicals with NO. For the P-3 flights during NEAQS 2004, there were no specific measurements of isoprene nitrates.…”

“…[14] The measured concentration of isoprene nitrates reached ,90 pptv in a forest site at Pellston, Michigan, [15] and as high as 150 pptv in rural Tennessee. [16] ANs were also detected in the lower stratosphere by the NASA ER-2 aircraft, covering a latitude range of 608N to 28S, 1158W to 1558W and altitudes to 20.5 km. [17] Methyl and ethyl nitrate account for ,20-40 % of the total light ANs.…”

“…This is in agreement with the recent report for a NO 2 quantum yield of unity from photodissociation of methyl and isopropyl nitrate. [58] In the presence of O 2 , the H and HCO radicals formed from reactions 11 and 13b, will rapidly react with O 2 , resulting in the formation of HO 2 , H 2 O 2 and OH (reactions [16][17][18], and the oxidisation of NO 2 into HNO 3 (reaction 20) and HO 2 NO 2 (reaction 21). HC(O)O 2 was reported to be the intermediate product in the HCO þ O 2 reaction, and it can decompose rapidly to CO and HO 2 because of its instability (reactions 19).…”

“…Ambient measurements of specific individual RONO 2 have, with few exceptions (Fischer et al, 2000;Grossenbacher et al, 2001Grossenbacher et al, , 2004, been limited to simple alkyl nitrates. As a result of the development of thermal dissociation laser induced fluorescence (TD-LIF) by Day et al (2002), measurement of total alkyl-nitrates ( ANs) as a class has become routine.…”

“…Ambient measurements of isoprene nitrates are rare, but have been conducted over two forested locations in Michigan and Tennessee using gas chromatography followed by pyrolytic conversion to and subsequent detection of NO 2 (Grossenbacher et al, 2004(Grossenbacher et al, , 2001). This technique speciates the isomers of the isoprene nitrates, in contrast to the measurement made here which is the sum of the isomers.…”
