Abstract. Various methods and measures have been developed to assess the quality of input devices and interaction techniques. One approach to investigating the performance of input devices and interaction techniques is to focus on the quality of the produced movements. The current paper proposes a new method of analyzing goal-directed movements by dividing them into meaningful phases. In addition to the proposed analysis method a selection of measures is suggested to assess different aspects of rapidly aimed movements. In order to evaluate the added value of the proposed analysis method an experiment has been conducted to compare two input devices (mouse versus stylus with tablet) with respect to their performance on a multi-directional pointing task. The results show that the analysis into several phases reveals clear differences in the movement strategy.

This paper discusses several usability issues related to the use of gestures as an input mode in multimodal interfaces. The use of gestures has been suggested before as a natural solution for applications that require hands-free and notouch interaction with computers, such as in virtual reality (VR) environments. We introduce a simple but robust 2D computer vision based gesture recognition system that was successfully used for interaction in VR environments such as CAVEs and Powerwalls. This interface was tested under 3 different scenarios, as a regular pointing device in a GUI interface, as a navigation tool, and as a visualization tool. Our experiments show that the time to completion of simple pointing tasks is considerably slower when compared to a mouse and that its use during even short periods of time causes fatigue. Despite these drawbacks, the use of gestures as an alternative mode in multimodal interfaces offers several advantages, such as quick access to computing resources that might be embedded in the environment, using a natural and intuitive way, and that scales nicely to group and collaborative applications, where gestures can be used sporadically.

Models of interaction tasks are quantitative descriptions of relationships between human temporal performance and the spatial characteristics of the interactive tasks. Examples include Fitts' law for modeling the pointing task and Accot and Zhai's steering law for the path steering task, etc. Models can be used as guidelines to design efficient user interfaces and quantitatively evaluate interaction techniques and input devices.In this paper, we introduce a 3D object pursuit interaction task, in which users are required to continuously track a moving target in a virtual environment. The entire movement of the task is broken into a tracking phase and a correction phase. For each phase, we propose a model that has been verified by two experiments. As the experimental results show, the time for the tracking phase is fixed once a task has been established, while the time for the correction phase usually varies according to some characteristics of the task. It can be modeled as a function of path length, target width and the velocity with which the target moves.The proposed model can be used to quantitatively evaluate the efficiency of user interfaces that involve the interaction with moving objects.
