A comparison of endoscopic strip craniectomy and pi craniectomy for treatment of sagittal craniosynostosis

Abstract: OBJECTIVESagittal craniosynostosis is managed with a wide variety of operative strategies. The current investigation compares the clinical outcomes of two widely performed techniques: pi craniectomy and minimally invasive endoscopic strip craniectomy (ESC) followed by helmet therapy.METHODSThis IRB-approved retrospective study examined patients diagnosed with nonsyndromic, single-suture sagittal craniosyno… Show more

“…Reporting on their clinical examination, five authors supplemented such with a CT scan [ 22 , 28 , 34 , 37 , 44 ]. Among them, four indicated to do so in all patients [ 28 , 34 , 37 , 44 ], whereby only one [ 22 ] preserved the confirming method for cases of observed papilledema or macrocephaly [ 22 ].…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6] Open cranial vault reconstruction (OCVR) remains the historical gold standard treatment. 7 However, following the acceptance of strip craniectomy with orthotic helmet therapy (SCOT) to treat selected patients with sagittal synostosis, [8][9][10] similar approaches to metopic synostosis have been developed. Prior studies in metopic synostosis have reported that SCOT is associated with shorter operative time, decreased blood loss, and less frequent admission to the intensive care unit compared with OCVR.…”

“…In addition, raised intracranial pressure may cause cognitive impairment and visual loss ( Gault et al, 1992 ; Lo and Chen, 1999 ). Various calvarial reconstructions to alleviate and correct these abnormalities have existed since the late nineteenth century ( Lane, 1892 ; Lauritzen et al, 2006 ; Rocco et al, 2012 ; Simpson et al, 2015 ; Mathijssen, 2015 ; Microvic et al, 2016 ) with their various cognitive and morphological outcomes debated and compared to optimize the management of this condition ( Hashim et al, 2014 ; Isaac et al, 2018 ; Magge et al, 2019 ).…”
