A Comparison of Danofloxacin and Tylosin in the Control of Induced Mycoplasma gallisepticum Infection in Broiler Chicks

Abstract: Experimental mycoplasmosis was induced in 1-day-old chicks by intrapulmonary inoculation of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). This method of infection proved to be useful for evaluating the efficacy of antimicrobial medication, by measuring mortality, weight gain, pathological responses, frequency of reisolation of MG, and seroconversion. Using this model, the efficacies of danofloxacin (a novel fluoroquinolone) and tylosin were compared for two MG isolates, a reference isolate (the R-strain) and a field isolate … Show more

“…Danofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial, has been compared to tylosin at concentrations equivalent for control of mortality and maintenance of weight gain in experimentally infected 1-day-old chicks. It was found that the frequency of reisolation of M. gallisepticum from chicks treated with danofloxacin was lower than that from chicks treated with tylosin (Tanner et al, 1993).…”

“…Additionally, the effectiveness of 10 mg/kg of difloxacin and 10 mg/kg of enrofloxacin was similar in treating respiratory symptoms. Tanner et al (1993) and Kempf et al (1992) both used danofloxacin and tilmicosin to treat chickens infected with MG. The research found that the percentage of chickens testing positive in the danofloxacin treatment group was significantly lower than that in the tilmicosin treatment group.…”

“…Among the most commonly used antibiotics against mycoplasma infections is the fluroquinolone compounds which is widely used in clinical veterinary practice because of their wide spectrum bactericidal activity and high degree of bioavailability. [5,6] Different studies have been produced to 3 evaluate the efficacy of using flouroquinolons alone or in combination with old antimycoplasma drugs like macrolides and tertacyclins against avian mycoplasmosis [6,7,8,9] reported superiority of danofloxacin compared to tylosin for control of MG infection in broiler chickens.…”
