A Comparison between Transcutaneous and Total Serum Bilirubin in Healthy-term Greek Neonates with Clinical Jaundice

Abstract: Abstract:The accuracy of transcutaneous bilirubin meters has been assessed in newborns from various ethnic backgrounds. However, there are limited data on Greek newborns. Our study examined the accuracy of transcutaneous bilirubin measurements in clinically jaundiced healthy-term Greek newborns, using total serum bilirubin as the reference standard, in order to re-evaluate our local guidelines about neonatal jaundice. Clinically jaundiced newborns requiring total serum bilirubin level estimation were recruited… Show more

“…However a study in Greek neonates did not find a good correlation between TcB and TSB in otherwise healthy term neonates. [8] Though in agreement, but the correlation coefficient "r" between TcB and TSB measurements in our study was 0.95 which is at the higher side of previously published comparisons.…”

“…Some studies mentioned that BiliChek has a tendency to overestimate serum bilirubin; whereas others mentioned that the TcB level measured using BiliChek was on average lower than the TSB level . In our studies, we found that the mean TcB level is mostly higher than the mean TSB level in term and late‐preterm infants before, under, and 24 hours after phototherapy; however, the TcB level was lower than the TSB level when measurement was obtained during phototherapy of 5 days in term infants and 6 days in late‐preterm infants.…”

“…This is in agreement with other studies conducted in the North American, Hispanic, Chinese, and Italian populations. 7 - 9 , 12 - 14 However, a study from Greece 4 concluded that TcB does not correlate well with TSB and tends to underestimate TSB.…”

“…Most of the studies had validated TcB in relatively homogenous populations, such as Greek, Caucasian, Chinese, Hispanic, and Africans. 4 - 7 Studies were varied in their assessment of the accuracy of TcB measurement; poor to excellent agreement between TSB and TcB has been reported. 4 - 9 The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the accuracy of TcB as measured by BiliCheck device (SpectRx, Inc., Norcross, GA, USA) in jaundiced, otherwise healthy, Saudi term infants who required TSB measurements.…”
