A comparison between Gauss-Newton and Markov-chain Monte Carlo–based methods for inverting spectral induced-polarization data for Cole-Cole parameters

Abstract: We develop a Bayesian model to invert spectral induced polarization (SIP) data for ColeCole parameters using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling methods. We compare the performance of the MCMC based stochastic method with an iterative Gauss-Newton based deterministic method for Cole-Cole parameter estimation through inversion of synthetic and laboratory SIP data. The Gauss-Newton based method can provide an optimal solution for given objective functions under constraints, but the obtained optimal solution… Show more

“…We inverted the electrical data using a deterministic algorithm based on a leastsquares approach with Marquardt regularization (Kemna, 2000). Although this inversion method offers reasonable parameter estimates satisfying the purpose of this study, recently developed stochastic inversion algorithms (using a Bayesian framework) have shown improved parameter estimates and tighter uncertainty bounds of parameters (Ghorbani et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2008).…”

“…The inversion procedure is based on the work of Mosegaard and Tarantola (1995). For a detailed description of the application to SIP data, and a comparison to a deterministic approach of fitting the Cole-Cole model, please see Chen et al (2008). We considered uniform prior distributions for all parameters except for the low-frequency asymptote of the resistivity ρ 0 , which we set to the resistivity value observed at the lowest measurement frequency of 1 mHz.…”

“…The induced polarization method has been used increasingly in environmental investigations, because IP measurements are very sensitive to the low frequency capacitive properties of rocks and soils (Chen et al, 2008). These properties are associated with diffusion-controlled polarization processes that occur at the mineral-fluid interface (Slater and Lesmes, 2002).…”
