A Comparison and Critique of Eucalyptus, OpenNebula and Nimbus

Abstract: Eucalyptus, OpenNebula and Nimbus are three major open-source cloud-computing software platforms. The overall function of these systems is to manage the provisioning of virtual machines for a cloud providing infrastructure-as-a-service. These various open-source projects provide an important alternative for those who do not wish to use a commercially provided cloud. We provide a comparison and analysis of each of these systems. We begin with a short summary comparing the current raw feature set of these project… Show more

“…OpenStack is only one open source implementation of an IaaS cloud system, and other implementations like Eucalyptus [14] and OpenNebula [12] are quite similar in terms of architectural aspects [16]. Hence, our [3] generic approaches solving the HA questions, can be applied to them with small adaptions as well (see Section 5).…”

“…Most IaaS cloud computing environments have a Cloud Controller such as Eucalyptus [7], OpenNebula [8] or OpenStack [9] to manage its resources, and they have similar architectures [9]. However, they don't suppose IaaS resources to be widely distributed.…”

“…In these works, the architecture and various components of these solutions were presented. There are also comparative studies of different solutions [18,22]. In [1,11,13], it is essentially an overview of the solutions Eucalyptus, Nimbusm OpenNebula and a presentation of their different characteristics.…”

“…In [1,11,13], it is essentially an overview of the solutions Eucalyptus, Nimbusm OpenNebula and a presentation of their different characteristics. In [18,22], comparative studies of Eucalyptus, Nimbus and OpenNebula, including characteristics, architectures and applications are done in order to provide more freedom of choice for the users of the cloud. Concerning OpenStack, little work has addressed this solution [10].…”
