A comparative trial of LC9018 plus doxorubicin and doxorubicin alone for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion secondary to lung cancer

Abstract: The efficacy and safety of intrapleural LC9018 (Yakult Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) with or without doxorubicin (Adriamycin; Adria Laboratories, Columbus, OH) were evaluated in a randomized, controlled trial performed in 95 patients with malignant pleural effusions secondary to lung cancer. Seventy‐six patients were eligible for the assessment of efficacy. The response rate for treatment with intrapleural doxorubicin plus LC9018 (38 patients) was 73.7%, which was significantly higher than the response rate of 39.5%… Show more

“…Nevertheless, some early reports have suggested that heat-killed Lactobacillus casei Shirota could be useful in the treatment of carcinoma of the uterine cervix (44, 45) and secondary to lung cancer (46). In one preclinical study, viable L. casei was found to be more effective than heat-killed L. casei in the prevention of secondary tumours in preimmunized mice (47).…”

“…When the malignancy is localized in the pleural cavity, intrapleural chemotherapy may treat the underlying neoplasm in addition to controlling the effusion [159,160]. To obtain maximal anticancer activity with minimal systemic side effects, however, a high intrapleural concentration with minimal systemic spread of the antineoplastic agent is required.…”
