Phosphorus (P) is the second-most important element after nitrogen that is required for plant growth. Although this element is abundant in most soils, it is rarely available in plant-accessible forms since most of it normally exists in soil in insoluble forms such as phosphates. In conventional agriculture, P is normally supplied as chemical fertilizer to satisfy plant P requirements. This, to a large extent, boosts plant production. However, chemical fertilizers are costly, have a huge carbon footprint, and are environmentally-unsustainable owing to the high energy requirements during their synthesis. Besides, P-containing agricultural run-offs contribute hugely to the eutrophication of water bodies and environmental degradation. Moreover, plants can consume only a small amount of chemically-supplied P since between 75 and 90% of this form of P normally get precipitated into complexes and rapidly become fixed in soil. These issues and concerns necessitate research into alternative and viable ways of supplying P to plants. Rhizobacteria have for decades been investigated in vivo and in planta as suitable tools in sustainable agriculture due to the plant-growth-promoting activities such as nutrients’ solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and production of phytohormones. Although a lot of research has been done on different nutrients-solubilizing rhizobacteria and their potential in sustainable agriculture, their mechanisms of action and prospects in sustainable agriculture remain to be fully understood. This review particularly focuses on the P solubilizing rhizobacteria and evaluates their diversity, mechanisms of action, and prospects in sustainable agriculture based on the present and future scenario of their application. Such information is useful in determining their potential and evaluating their prospects in promoting sustainable agricultural systems.

Aims: Phosphate is an essential nutrient required for plant growth, but its solubility in the soil is relatively low (0.1%). Microbes can dissolve phosphate to meet crop requirements. This study aimed to isolate phosphate solubilizing bacteria from indigenous microorganisms (IMO) of cow rumen. Methodology and results: The selection of isolates on a Pikovskaya medium was using a clear zone index and a spectrophotometer for phosphate solubilization measurements. Hypersensitivity was tested on tobacco leaves and tested antagonists within isolates. The results found that four selected isolates had the highest phosphate dissolving potential, namely, MTA1, SMAD1, SMAD2, and SMAD3. The culture of selected isolates on plate media showed that the morphological characters of the four colonies are the same. They had round form (circular), the edge of the colony were smooth, flat elevation, white and cream color. Isolate MTA1 had the highest phosphate solubilizing activity compared to the others. The isolate that showed the highest phosphate solubilizing activity were identified based on 16S rRNA gene. The result of molecular identification showed that strain MTA1 was closely related to Lactobacillus plantarum with a similarity level of 99%. L. plantarum performed the highest ability to form a clear zone (7.66 mm). The highest concentration of soluble phosphate was observed on day 5 (278.42 mg/L). Conclusion, significance, and impact of the study: Lactobacillus plantarum which was isolated from the IMO of cow rumen in East Java, Indonesia was identified as one of the phosphate solubilizing bacteria that are useful for the development of eco-friendly biofertilizer. The application of phosphate solubilizing microbes can be used to increase the soil fertility.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an important technology for the treatment of livestock and poultry manure. The optimal experimental conditions were studied, with deer manure as a fermentation material and mushroom residue as an inoculum. At the same time, methane production was increased by adding zeolite and changing the magnetic field conditions. The results showed that a 6% solid content was the best condition for producing methane. The optimal conditions for methane production were obtained by adding 35 g of mushroom residue to 80 g of deer manure at 35 °C. The addition of organic wastewater (OW) improved methane production. The result of improving the methane production factor showed that adding zeolite during the reaction process could increase the methane production rate. When the amount of zeolite was over 8% total solids (TSes), methane production could improve, but the rate decreased. Setting a different magnetic field strength in the AD environment showed that when the distance between the magnetic field and the reactor was 50 mm and the magnetic field strength was 10–50 mT, the methane production increment and the content of methane in the mixed gases increased.
