A comparative study: synthetic dyes as photosensitizers for dye-sensitized \\solar cells

Abstract: In this paper, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using a zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconducting layer and different synthetic dyes. Eight different synthetic dyes were used to fabricate the DSSCs. Nanocrystalline ZnO powder was coated on transparent conducting fluorine-doped tin oxide glass using the doctor blade method to form a thin layer. The absorption spectra of the synthetic dyes were investigated. DSSCs were characterized with J -V characteristic curves. The parameters reflecting the cell perf… Show more

“…The absorption coefficient behaves just like the extinction coefficient as clear in figure (5) where the absorption coefficient increase after adding the dye and increases by increasing concentrations of dye. From figure (5) we can see the absorption coefficient is small for small energies which mean that the incident photon energy is not equal to the difference of the energy between the valance and conduction bands (E ph << E g ).…”

“…Fundamental absorption edge shifted to lower energies and longer wavelengths after addition as indicated which mean there is a chemical interaction between the polymer and the dye. Reflectance for pure and doped samples calculated by using the equation (5). There is a relation between the extinction coefficient and absorption coefficient determined by the equation (6).…”

“…Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films have attracted considerable attention as transparent conductive nanostructure materials that have been considered for potential applications in several technological devices, such as photocatalytic material [1], piezoelectric devices [2], chemical/humidity sensors [3,4], solar cells [5,6], and photocathodic protections [7,8]. ZnO has a wide direct band gap of around 3.37 eV at room temperature resulting in good electrical and optoelectrical properties and high photosensitivity [9].…”
