“…On the other hand, Daud et al stated that Nafion 117 has a poor protron transfer ability in the MFCs. Hydrophilic sulfonated polyetherketone (SPEEK) is an attractive alternative to costly nafionic membranes. , Its surface has negatively charged (SO 3– ) ions that limit the passage of anions and facilitate cations to pass through the membrane. Moreover, it delivers well in direct methanol fuel cells.…”

“…PEEK sulfonation was carried out in a similar way reported previously. 11,12 At first, 5 g of PEEK was dried at 100 C for 24 h in a vacuum oven. The obtained dry PEEK was completely dissolved in 250 mL H 2 SO 4 for 48 h. Then, the solution was dropped into an ice-water mixture very slowly.…”

“…The methanol permeabilities (P M ) of the membranes were examined using the same experimental procedure reported in our earlier studies. 11,12 Surface images of the prepared composite membranes were taken using the FEI Quanta FEG 450 scanning electron microscope after sputtering the samples with gold. The surface hydrophilicity of the composite membranes was investigated using KSV Attension Tensiometer.…”

“…The FESEM proves that spherical structures on the film surface area due to the increased concentration of SPEEK in the mixture due to several groups of sulfonic groups (SO 3 H) are found in the hydrophobic or vice versa. Dönmez et al 205 stated that high SPEEK concentrations in the PVDF-SPEEK mixture would cause spherical structure shapes aggregation. The results of the EDX analysis conducted by them show that the spherical structure contains high concentrations of sulfur.…”
